6: PENTHESILEA AND ACHILLES

I am Penthesilea, daughter of Ares, who rides to Troy with twelve Amazon warriors to fight beside the doomed Trojans. My spear finds many foes, until I stand face to face with Achilles, whose strength rivals the gods. His weapon pierces my heart, and as I fall, he is struck by love and remorse at the sight of my face. In that instant, his triumph turns to grief, and I become the wound he cannot heal.
