4: Abduction of Persephone
I am Persephone, daughter of Demeter, who gathers flowers in spring when the earth splits beneath my feet. Hades rises in his chariot and carries me to the Underworld as the narcissus wilts in my grasp. My mother searches the world in grief until Zeus sends Hermes to secure my return, but I have tasted the pomegranate and must remain half the year below. When I rise, the world blooms again; when I descend, it withers in mourning.
